The Merrill Lynch Shootout was founded in 1989 to create a unique event for PGA Tour players with a goal of raising money to help children's charities.

The Mayakoba Golf Classic made history in 2007 when it became the first full-field, official money PGA TOUR event to ever be conducted outside of the United States or Canada. Each February, México's only PGA TOUR event is contested at the Greg Norman-designed El Camaleón Golf Club.
