It was early in 1987 that Merv Norman, father of that famous Australian golfer, Greg, wrote to major companies advising of the intention of forming a Foundation to fund the tuition of Queensland junior golfers. His letter, in part, read:
"Probably more than any other sport, the game of golf requires self-discipline and determination - qualities that help to build character and personal strength in our young people, and it is on our young people that the future of golf and of our country rests.
It is therefore beneficial that we encourage young people to take up the game, to help them develop positive skills and attitudes and to progress through further play and competition to succeed in life.
My son Greg came through these junior ranks and now he has specifically requested the formation of the Greg Norman Golf Foundation to enable him to contribute to the development and expansion of the playing of golf by juniors. He will actively support the Foundation on a personal basis, as his time and schedules permit.
The Foundation will provide professional guidance and instruction throughout Queensland to school students and those in other educational establishments, children with specific physical disabilities and junior members of golf clubs."
And so the Foundation was born. It constituted on 25th June 1987 and incorporated in January 1988.
The Foundation's aim is to bring out the best by promoting the very highest standards for junior golf, to prepare young golfers for the future and to bring professional golf tuition within the reach of interested people in Queensland.
· Actively support the provision of golf tuition and advice to juniors under 18 years of age throughout the state.
· Conduct golf tuition camps, and provide education materials to schools and golf clubs.
· Conduct golf tournaments throughout Queensland for juniors.
· Conduct Level "0" and Level "1" Accreditation courses.
· Conduct professional golf tuition to the disabled and indigenous people.
Greg Norman continues to financially support the Greg Norman Golf Foundation with large contributions on a yearly basis. This is the Foundation's main source of income for keeping such an exciting venture continuing.
