Navarro: The Caddie With The New Caddy

When he started carrying golf clubs for a living on the PGA Tour back in 1978, Tony Navarro never had visions of grandeur regarding the job.

Navarro landed some great jobs over the years, including working for longtime friend Greg Norman among others.

Tony Navarro stands next to a Cadillac he won caddying for Adam Scott at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship.

But on Sunday, Navarro scored yet another huge payback - and more than the thrill of his pro, Adam Scott, winning his sixth PGA Tour title. Scott's playoff victory over Ryan Moore at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship at the TPC Four Season Resort came with a bonus - sponsor EDS gave away a Cadillac XLR-V to the winner's caddie.

"It certainly is sweet," said Navarro, talking about the two-door, hard-top convertible and not his 10-percent of the nearly $1.2 million winner's share. "I've never seen anything like that on Tour before. It certainly is nice for EDS to put that out there for us."

Navarro admitted he tried not to think too much about the added spoils for Scott's incredible victory that was capped with a 48-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole after two missed chances at the victory.

"It's certainly great, but you had better not be thinking about that while you're trying to do your job," said the 48-year-old Navarro from Charlotte, N.C., site of this week's Wachovia Championship. "It's a really, really nice car."

Navarro may not be the first one to see the new vehicle. He said that the folks in Texas were going to work out details for shipping the car back to the Quad-Cities for him. With Scott playing this week and then in next week's Tournament Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., his wife, Sara, and their 8- and 12-year-old daughters could enjoy it first.

"She's pretty excited about it, too," said Tony of his wife. "I'm certain it won't be in the garage too long."

Navarro loved the idea of incentives being thrown the way of the caddies.

"I think it's a great idea," he said. "EDS certainly got a lot of coverage out of it; I would think it's a sponsor's dream to get that much coverage above and beyond the golf tournament itself. It seemed to spark a lot of enthusiasm in the tournament."

It sure did in the Navarro family.
