Norman To Play In Cialis Western Open
LEMONT, Ill. -- Two-time major champion and World Golf Hall of Fame memberGreg Norman has joined a talent-laden field in the Cialis Western Open, tobe played June 28-July 4, 2004, at Cog Hill Golf Club in Lemont, Ill.
Norman officially notified the PGA TOUR this week that he will play at CogHill. "I am very much looking forward to competing in the inaugural CialisWestern Open," Norman said. "Cog Hill is a challenging layout, but a coursethat I have had much success on over the years."
WGA Tournament Director John Kaczkowski welcomed the news that Norman willbe playing in the Cialis Western Open. "Greg Norman has been one of theelite players in the game over the past two decades, and he enjoys greatrapport with fans worldwide," said Kaczkowski. "His presence guaranteesincreased fan interest and excitement at this year's tournament."
Norman finished second in the Western Open in each of the first three yearsthe championship was played at Cog Hill, 1991-1993. His last appearance inthe Western Open was in 1996. Prior to 1991, Norman played in six WesternOpens at Butler National Golf Club in Oak Brook, finishing second in athree-hole playoff with Tom Watson in 1984 and tying for second in therain-shortened, 57-hole championship in 1987. In all, Norman has seventop-5 finishes in 10 Western Opens.
"This event has generated many fond memories for me," said Norman. "I can'twait to get back to Chicago, a city I am particularly fond of."
Norman noted that the Western Open is the third oldest golf championship inthe world behind only the British Open and U.S. Open. "With its richhistory and tradition, the Western Open is one of the truly special eventson TOUR," said Norman. "Also, the Western Golf Association should becommended for its continued efforts to raise funds for caddie scholarshipsthrough the Evans Scholars Foundation."
Other top players expected to challenge defending champion Tiger Woods forthe 101st Western Open title include Davis Love III, Vijay Singh, DavidToms and Charles Howell III. Winners of three Majors in 2003 - Mike Weir,Ben Curtis and Shaun Micheel - also are expected to play. The field of 156PGA TOUR professionals will be competing on Cog Hill's Course No. 4, ratedone of the top 60 layouts in the country by Golf Digest, for atournament-record $4.8 million purse. The winner will earn $864,000.
This year begins the tournament's second century in existence, and alsomarks the introduction of a new title sponsor in Cialis, the oral erectiledysfunction drug marketed by Lilly ICOS with a duration of effectiveness of36 hours. In January, officials from the PGA TOUR, WGA, and Lilly ICOSannounced the product as the title sponsor of the Cialis Western Openthrough 2006. Lilly ICOS LLC is a joint venture between ICOS Corporation(NASDAQ: ICOS) and Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY).
Cialis Western Open activities start Monday, June 28, with a Pro-Am onCourse No. 4 and conclude with the final championship round on Sunday, July4. Tickets for tournament days - Thursday through Sunday - are $37 inadvance for daily tickets or $40 at the gate. Single day tickets forpractice rounds - Monday through Wednesday - are $20. All tournament proceeds benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation, whichprovides college scholarships to deserving caddies. More than 7,800 caddieshave graduated from college as Evans Scholars. The WGA has administeredthe Evans Scholars Program since 1930.
