Bjorn Again With A 63

August 14, 2005

A round of 63 is the best anyone's ever scored in the four major championships. Saturday at the PGA Championship, Denmark's Thomas Bjorn became the 20th player to do it.

The most recent round of 63 before Bjorn at the PGA Championship was by Mark O'Meara in 2001 at Atlanta Athletic Club. There have been nine rounds of 63 in the PGA Championship.

It's been done twice at the Masters, by Nick Price in 1986 and Greg Norman in 1996. It has happened four times at the U.S. Open, including by Jack Nicklaus in 1980 when he won here at Baltusrol. Perhaps the most famous 63 is Johnny Miller's in the 1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont in Pennsylvania.

There have been seven 63s at the British Open; the most recent were in 1993 by Nick Faldo and Payne Stewart. Only Vijay Singh (1995 PGA Championship, 2003 U.S. Open) and Norman (1986 British Open, 1996 Masters) have shot a 63 in a major twice.
