Initial Works On Jumeirah Golf Estates Done

February 28, 2008

Rough shaping on the Fire and Earth courses at Jumeirah Golf Estates is now complete and fine shaping 80% finished, according to a representative of the development.

Initial grassing has also begun, with rye grass being used to temporarily maintain the shape of bunkers, with Bermuda grass on the fairways. The courses will use TifEagle grass once complete.

The Fire and Earth courses are designed by Greg Norman. The development - set to be one of the largest golf communities in the world - also features two other courses, Water by Vijay Singh, and Wind, which has been jointly designed by Sergio Garcia, Pete Dye and Norman.

The original design of the Fire and Earth courses has been revised recently with some of the greens resized and a number of holes adjusted.

The Fire and Earth courses are expected to be completed end of 2008.

Brown Secures Dramatic Win At Jaypee Greens

February 23, 2008

New Zealand's Mark Brown claimed his maiden Asian Tour title with a four-stroke win at the inaugural SAIL Open on Saturday after carding a final round three-under-par 69 at the Greg Norman-designed Jaypee Greens.

Overnight leader Brown headed down the final fairway with a one-stroke advantage over playing partner Scott Hend, but while the 33-year-old New Zealander holed a 10-foot bride putt at the 461-yard par four 18th, the Australian shipped a double-bogey six after finding water off the tee to card a final round 72.

"I was nervous when I started. A one-shot lead made me feel everybody was chasing me. And then right through the last few holes, I had just a one-shot lead," said Brown.

"I just wanted to get close on the final hole and tap in for par, but it just went in."

The final hole nightmare for Hend handed Brown, who finished fifth in Indonesia last week, a convincing victory margin and also saw Indian number one Jyoti Randhawa (71) and South Korea's Noh Seung-yul (69) claim a share of second place at 10-under-par.

Brown collected a winner's cheque of US$63,400 to propel himself into third place on the Asian Tour Order of Merit behind Indian Masters champion SSP Chowrasia and Jeev Milkha Singh.

Mayakoba Golf Classic Brings Golf's Best To Riviera Maya

February 20, 2008

As golf's boldest names, aficionados the world-over and leading media descend upon Mexico's Riviera Maya for the second annual Mayakoba Golf Classic, this picturesque Mexican pueblo is truly becoming what Conde Nast forecasted years ago, "Mexico's most fashionable getaway."

The 2008 Mayakoba Golf Classic, which made history last year as the first official PGA Tour event held outside of the U.S. and Canada, will be held at Mayakoba Resort's unique El Camaleón Golf Course for the second year in a row. Greg Norman's latest master design, the aptly named El Camaleón Golf Course blends three distinct landscapes -- tropical jungle, dense mangroves, and oceanfront stretches of sand with holes bisected by massive limestone canals.

Reigning champion Fred Funk is scheduled to compete and defend his title against some of golf's toughest competition, including Greg Norman, John Daly, Brian Kontak and others. Funk has a tough act to follow; Funk left last year's competition as the second man in history to win a PGA Tour event after winning on the Champions Tour. Whatever the outcome, it can be promised that discerning sophisticates in-the-know will be at Mayakoba Resort to see first-hand what Funk achieves this year.
