More than 40 Hall of Fame football and basketball players will descend on
the Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg, Va., July 9 for the 16th Annual Bobby
Mitchell/Toyota Hall of Fame Classic.
Mitchell, a former Washington Redskin, created the tournament 16 years ago
with the help of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, but has been dedicated
to defeating leukemia since his days of playing football.
"I was traded by the Cleveland Browns to the Washington Redskins for
Heisman Trophy winner Ernie Davis in 1962," Mitchell said. Davis was
diagnosed with leukemia shortly after the trade and never played a single
down of professional football.
Eight holes on both the Greg Norman course and the Robert Trent Jones
course will have gallery access for fans who make a $5 donation to The
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Last year, the tournament raised $680,000 for the society and this year
organizers of the event hope to raise $1 million. For more information on
