Hardly a day goes by when members or guests don't attempt reenactments of
one of the game's historic putts on the 18th green at Winged Foot's West
Course's. And it matters not whether the cup is in the proper position, as
most members can locate the proper hole locations.
It was Greg Norman's monster downhill 40-footer for par from the left
fringe on the 72nd hole of the 1984 U.S. Open. Norman was tied with Fuzzy
Zoeller, who was standing in the fairway, when his putt broke some four
feet left-to-right. After the Shark opted to leave the flagstick in, his
putt struck it squarely and dropped, setting off a celebration from Norman
and prompting Zoeller to wave a white towel in mock surrender. |
Carl Pettersson's 12-under-par 276 total was the highest winning four-round score at The Memorial since 1989, when Bob Tway finished at 277. It also was the highest winning score in relation to par since 1990, when Greg
Norman won the first of his two Memorial titles at even-par 216 after the final round was canceled because of bad weather. |
Greg Norman appeared on Canada AM this morning. Canada AM, like the Today Show in the United States, airs throughout Canada and offers the latest
local, national and international news, business, weather sports and
entertainment. It is the country's most-watched morning show. |

What goes around comes around, the old saying goes. And that's especially true for the Aussie boomerang, featured as part of the Detroit Zoo's Australian Outback theme for this year's "Sunset at the Zoo" fund-raiser set for 7-11:30 p.m. June 16 at the zoo's main picnic grove.
The Zoological Society sent out boomerangs to local and national celebrities and asked them to decorate and sign them for the event's silent auction. So, to be sold to the highest bidder are boomerangs autographed by professional golfer and Aussie native Greg Norman, "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno, actors Tim Allen and Joan Cusack, and Red Wings Steve Yzerman, Chris Chelios, Pavel Datsyuk, Brendan Shanahan, Tomas Holmstrom, Manny Legace, Nicklas Lidstrom, Kirk Maltby and others.
The evening features a strolling supper from 40 fine restaurants, with music from the Jerry Ross Band. Tickets are $125 to $500 per person. They're available at 248-541-5717, ext. 3750, or www.detroitzoo.org. |
Greg Norman's first victory in the United States came at the 1983 Kapalua
International. Norman won by eight shots at the Arnold Palmer-designed
Kapalua Bay course on the island of Maui, and took home $100,000 -- the
largest check of his professional career at that point -- for his efforts. |
