Extra Holes, Stirring Finishes (Palm Beach Post) | March 3, 2004 |
Greg Norman was involved in the most memorable playoff at Doral. In 1990,
Norman shot a final-round 62 to make it into a four-way playoff with Mark
Calcavecchia, Paul Azinger and Tim Simpson. Norman wasted little time in
the playoff, chipping in for eagle on the par-5 first hole. "You knew with
four guys who were playing well, it was going to take at least a 4 to move
on, but a 3 would probably get you the win," Norman said. "I just played
aggressively."
But that approach didn't help Norman in the 1989 British Open playoff with
Calcavecchia and Wayne Grady. That was the year the Royal & Ancient
switched from sudden-death to a four-hole aggregate score, which seemed to
bother Norman after he opened the playoff with two birdies to take the
lead.
"After that, I'm thinking this tournament should be over and done with and
I should be the British Open champion -- I would have been the year
before," Norman said. "Rightly or wrongly, that went through my mind. Then
I got a little aggressive on the next hole because I wanted to close it out
with another birdie." Instead, he bogeyed the third hole to fall into a tie
and ultimately never finished the last hole after his third shot went out
of bounds. Calcavecchia stuck his approach shot close and won his only
major. |
