After a five-month delay -- thanks to Hurricane Wilma -- the 397-room Fairmont Mayakoba, a new eco-friendly resort, opens May 1 on the Maya Riviera, about 40 miles south of Cancun.
To help preserve the landscape and lessen beach erosion, the Fairmont, which consists of 90 two-story casitas, was set back from the beach, behind a strip of mangroves. Trees on the buildings' sites were saved for replanting.
And no cars are allowed: Guests can either ride bicycles provided by the resort or catch rides on electric golf carts or boats called lanchas along waterways throughout the grounds.
El Camaleon, an 18-hole, Greg Norman golf course, has a reforestation program that allows guests to make a donation to plant seedlings of native trees. And to help protect endangered sea turtles, eggs will be relocated from the beach. |
