Tennessee National Invites Public To Take Closer Look | October 16, 2005 |
Tennessee National will open its gates today in Loudon, looking to spark an enthusiastic flame in the Greg Norman-designed golf course and the developing community around it.
Less than a year after the groundbreaking began on the $500 million course, the first eight holes are done and general manager Scott Pasolli is ready to show them off to the public between 2-5 p.m.
"We also want to announce the public availability of home sites," Pasolli said. "It's a public-preview, open house. We want to celebrate the progress we've made. We want to stimulate some excitement and interest for Tennessee National."
Bluegrass music, barbecue and golf cart tours will be available; as will a demo of the 2006 line of MacGregor golf products, hosted by former Lady Vol golfer Stacy Bergman.
On the course, visitors will not see a common golf courses. They will see the product of more advanced technology and newer visual design theories.
Cart paths, while concrete, are the color of pine straw so they blend into the natural terrain. Some of the bunkers are sod-walled, like those at a British Open.
"You get in a few of those," Pasolli said, "and it'll be tough to get out."
Invisible to the eyes is the sub-air system that's been implemented underneath the surface of greens and tee boxes. It is top-of-the-line, turf-management technology, matching the advancements used at Augusta National, Pebble Beach, Pinehurst No. 2, Bay Hill and Harbour Town.
"It (the sub-air system) is like a vacuum that's connected to pumps to control moisture and temperature of the greens; that helps with the playability of the course."
It also provides the Tennessee National crew with the ability to oxygenate the greens and to cool and heat root zones so on-course, cooling fans are not needed.
Memberships are still available, and homeownership in the Golfside Villas and Golf Village is not a requirement. When finished, the course will be a par-72 layout with five sets of tees for all playing levels - the highest level playing at 7,271 yards. |
