Norman's Eight Birdie Conquest

PACIFIC HARBOUR (Fiji) - Greg Norman shot a brilliant eight under par 64 to win the $2000 Pro-Am at Pacific Harbour Golf Club today.

He scored by four shots from Tasmanian David Good, with New Zealander Mike Moynihan and Australian Ted Ball a further shot back.

The pro-am was a build-up to the $30,000 Gilbey's Gin South Seas Classic starting here tomorrow.

With eight birdies 22-year-old Norman showed he can play sensational golf after a long, tiring air trip.

He arrived here yesterday after a 30 hour flight from London via New York followed by a four hour bus trip yesterday and went straight onto the course for his first look at the Robert Trent Jones Jr. layout.

"I guess I hit the ball fairly well," Norman said after his 64, which cannot be recognized as a course record because the 14th was not played from the championship tee. The course is 6,908 yards long.

The course record of 67 was set by Sydney professional George Serham in the opening round of last year's Classic, but Ian Stanley's four round winning score was level par 288.

Playing the big ball (which he plans to use throughout the major Australian circuit), Norman attacked the flag with every approach, be it wedge or No. 3 wood.

If he wasn't favorite to win the Classic before his 64, he certainly is now.
