Aussies Hailed As New Kings Of Golf
| 1985 Dunhill Cup | | Venue: | St. Andrews Golf Links, Old Course | | Where: | St. Andrews, Scotland |
Greg Norman steered Australia to a crushing 3-0 victory over the United
States in the inaugural Dunhill Cup at St. Andrews.
Norman dropped eight birdies in a course record tying 7-under-par 65 to
defeat Mark O'Meara by a whopping eight shots.
West Australian Graham Marsh posted a 71, three shots clear of Raymond
Floyd, to seal the victory for Australia in golf's first $1 million
tournament.
David Graham finished off the top-seeded Americans as he coasted home in
front o nearly 10,000 spectators at the Old Course. Graham finished with a
69 and beat Curtis Strange by three strokes.
The Australians collected $100,000 each for their stunning victory.
Norman blitzed O'Meara on the front nine with five birdies in an outward 31
and stormed home with three more birdies on the inward half.
It was Norman's day, as it had been Norman's tournament. "Greg Norman is
something else," Graham said. "He blew everyone away this week."
Marsh was a steady No. 2, and took the pressure off Graham in the last
match -- a fact Graham duly acknowledged. Marsh predicted the victory would
provide an enormous boost for golf in Australia.
"Probably because we are so far away from everyone else we don't have the
opportunity to prove ourselves so often in team matches," he said. "There
is a tremendous amount of talent in Australian golf, an we have a fine crop
of youngsters."
