Grand Slam To Norman

Greg Norman posted rounds of 71 and 74 that was good enough for a two-shot victory in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

The Great White Shark finished at 1-over-par and picked up the winner's check of $400,000, the biggest check in Norman's 17-year career.

"It was like a mackerel in the moonlight -- shiny one minute and smelly the next," said Norman, when describing his play.

Paul Azinger finished two strokes off the pace while Bernhard Langer and U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen tied for third at 4-over-par.

Janzen crept within one shot of Norman after 35 holes before disaster struck. He mis-hit a 4-iron out of a fairway bunker on the 18th hole and sent his ball into a water hazard. Janzen settled for a double-bogey finish.

Norman won his second British Open Championship this year, firing the lowest final round ever recorded in a major. He defeated Englishman Nick Faldo by two shots in what was described as the finest performance in the history of any major championship.

Coincidentally, Norman won his first British Open in 1986, the same year he snatched his first PGA Grand Slam of Golf title.

The world's No. 1 ranked player, who eclipsed the $1 million mark in season earnings for the second year, won the Doral-Ryder Open in March and the Taiheiyo Masters in Japan last month. With 17 tournament starts this year, the Shark has two second-place finishes and 14 top-10s.
