Home Win On Home Turf

Greg Norman has always felt at home competing in Queensland. He has traditionally enjoyed a solid following in his birth state. And every event in which Norman participates is guaranteed to draw capacity crowds. The Queensland Open was no exception.

The Open was played at the Royal Queensland, and Norman took the title with a 45-foot birdie putt on the final hole capping off a four-round total of 11-under-par 277. That putt secured a one-stroke victory over Australian Open champion Bob Shearer and Ozzie Moore.

Heat and humidity prevailed the entire week, as Norman, ever the conqueror of difficult conditions, managed a two-stroke lead at the midway point. This victory surprised few, as Norman had cut his teeth at Royal Queensland and displayed a welcome familiarity with his surroundings. The home crowd was also a great boost.

Norman's victory this week follows last week's Suntory Match Play win in the United Kingdom.
