Norman - New South Wales Open Champion
1978 New South Wales Open
Venue:
Manly Golf Club, Sydney
Where:
New South Wales, Australia
The tall, fair-haired Queenslander, Greg Norman, closed with a steady 70 and won the New South Wales Open championship by three shots over Billy Dunk. In only his third season as a professional, Norman is showing considerable talent. He already captured two other titles earlier this year, winning the Festival of Sydney Open and the Traralgon Classic.
Norman raced out of the starting block and snatched a three-shot lead after the first round. He led two rookie professionals, Alex Bonnington from New Zealand and Graham Bugden from Canberra. Norman held a one-stroke lead after a level-par 72 in the second round. American Bob Clark, whose 5-under 67 kept him within three shots of the Queenslander, mounted a midway charge.
Norman went on to complete the wire-to-wire victory and collect the $10,000 winner's check when he fashioned a 2-under-par score in the final round. Norman finished at 13-under 275 and held off Dunk by three. Victorian Bob Shearer finished alone in third, four strokes off the pace.
Conditions at Manly Golf Club were clear and calm for the duration of the tournament.
