Defending champion Greg Norman was back to claim his second consecutive Australian PGA Championship title at the Castle Hills Golf Club. Norman posted a four-round total of 273 and defeated Magnus Persson of Sweden by eight shots.
Norman shot a 4-under 68 Friday and took a one-shot lead into the weekend. On the final day, in mild conditions with a balmy breeze, Norman posted a 69 to clinch the title and the $28,800 check.
Mike Cahill had reason for celebration. Though he finished well off the pace, he scored a hole-in-one on No. 14 in the final round.
He finished the year with a win in the Alfred Dunhill Cup team event, representing Australia for the first time at venerable St. Andrews. Norman also played in the Nissan Cup for the first time. He finished tied for second in the Canadian Open and the Bank of Boston Classic.
