Americans, particularly those who dwell in the Sunbelt States, enjoy similar lifestyles and live in similar climatic conditions as most Australians. Already in Australia, legislation at multi levels of Government now require shade to be provided in public places where people live, work and play.

"Protection from the harmful effects of the sun must become normal community practice extending from the provision of shade structures by government and non-government bodies to community members selecting shade areas for outdoor activities", states the Queensland Skin Cancer Strategic Plan Outline 2002.

In Florida, USA, the latest Florida Administrative Code on Outdoor Play Areas says "the outdoor area shall provide shade".

The most recent push in America is from the Department of Health and Human Services. They released a document in December 2006 called "Shade Planning for Americas Schools". This purpose of this 50 page document outlines steps that school communities can take to reducing the risk for skin cancer amongst students, teachers, staff and visitors. It supports sun-safety policies and goes in great depth about the necessity of providing shade. Click on the link below to view.
